A Florissons’ history

Peter Florisson came to Australia from Holland in 1950 with 25 pounds in his pocket. In 1957 he started an upholstery and motor trimming business in Bridgetown, in conjunction with selling used furniture. Six years later, after hearing exploits of a booming town called “Esperance” he decided to relocate his business, wife and five young children in 1963. The first local premises was a 400 square foot shed on Pink lake road, that Peter rented. Soon after setting up here, Peter saw the need for a floor covering and furniture shop in town. He had a modest beginning in these lines, stocking only a few items of furniture and some rolls of lino.

the first of many store relocations

From humble beginnings

In 1965 Peter moved Florissons to a larger and more central premises in Dutton Arcade where floorcoverings and soft furnishings were introduced into the business by his wife Beryl, and the upholstery and motor trimmings were completed to the rear of the store.

After seven years in this location, these premises also became too small and the business moved to Wallace Way shopping centre, by which time Florissons had expanded further to now include manchester, curtains and giftware – and employed five full time staff.

20 successful years

A milestone celebration

Three years later Florissons moved again to a 10,000 square foot building in Dempster Street – a place large enough to house their ever-growing lines of product, which now also included travel goods, wall paper and lighting! The traditional upholstery and motor trimming had been carried on by two of Peter’s six sons, Trevor & David.

In 1983 Florissons thanked the local community for their support that had spanned for over 20 years, and attributed much of their success to passing on savings to their customers and their vision for local job stability.

Who we are

Michael & Gill Florisson purchased Florissons from Michael’s parents in 2001, while it was still located at 96 Dempster Street. In 2008, they purchased their own truck (for runs to & from Perth) in order to minimise the impact of rising freight costs for their customers. They continued to expand their business until the time came for an even larger location in order to offer such a wide variety of products to the Esperance community! It was 2009 when Florissons moved again, to their current location on Norseman Road.

Although Florissons had always offered a range of flooring solutions, they also joined ‘Carpet Court’ in 2009 to increase buying power. In 2019 Florissons also purchased Esperance Tile Centre, which was then relocated and amalgamated into the current Florissons flagship store, further diversifying the range of interior products. Fastforward to 2022, and Florissons can still be found in the ‘big orange building’ on Norseman Road, where Gill and Michael currently employ 11 full time staff members, all of whom they call family!
